OMG, is there anything that has not had melamine added to it? This is crazy. Who is investigating this
mess? Who sells the melamine to all these companies? If this is a banned product why is it used in so many items meant for human consumption??

An Australian importer of edible body paint has withdrawn the Chinese-made novelty item after authorities found it contained the industrial chemical melamine, an official said Thursday.A limited amount of chocolate and strawberry-flavored Boxer Lovers Body Pen Set body paint was imported to Australia a few months ago for use at an exhibition and does not appear to have been sold in any stores, Food Standards Australia New Zealand spokeswoman Lydia Buchtmann said.

The importer voluntarily withdrew the product this week after tests by Canadian and British authorities found it was contaminated with melamine, she said.

A British sex shop chain suspended sales of the Chinese-manufactured product last week after Britain’s food regulator said it contained more than 50 times the allowed level of melamine.


Milk powder contaminated with melamine has been blamed for the deaths of four infants and for sickening about 54,000 others in mainland China.

Melamine is used in the manufacturing of plastics, fertilizer, paint and adhesives. Health experts say ingesting a small amount poses no danger, but in larger doses, the chemical can cause kidney stones and lead to kidney failure.

Other products previously recalled in Australia for melamine contamination are Orion-brand Tiramisu Italian Cake with Cheese Cream, Dali Yuan-brand First Milk vanilla-flavored drink, Kirin Milk Tea, Lotte Koala Biscuits, Cadbury Eclairs and White Rabbit candies.

Testing by the food standards agency on fruit and vegetables grown in China found no evidence of melamine contamination, Buchtmann said.
