MasterChef Australia Season 6 Updates and Recaps

MasterChef Australia, Season 6

This is one of my most viewed pages and searched page in Google.
I am not sure if people are looking for information on the new season coming up here in May.
Main site here for updates and information.

I watched season 7 but did not even attempt to write about it. MasterChef Australia has so many episodes I just could not keep up
as far as writing recaps. I enjoy many shows from Australia, but I get frustrated with the total lack of reviews and places to go and chat about the shows.

All contestants MasterChef Australia season 6 Back: Sarah, Ben, Brendan, Colin, Nick, Nicole, Scott, Sam, Amy, Sean

Middle: Byron, Steven, Kira, Jamie, Brent, Tracy, Emelia, Deepali

Front: Tash, Emily, Rachael, Renae, Georgia, Laura So far season 6 of MasterChef Australia is looking very good. The cooks do look amazing. I find the judges go over the top sometimes calling so many dishes “amazing, best dish ever on MasterChef”, and so forth, but I still enjoy their feedback. They do go over the top and make things more dramatic in the promos than it really turns out to be. But that is TV I guess. My son and I have great fun when we watch any reality contest type show like MasterChef or Amazing Race, or Top Chef, we write down our top 6 and bottom 4 picking who will be the first to go. So here is my choices for this seasons.

Brenden 1st eliminated MasterChef Au

Brenden 1st eliminated MasterChef Au

Brendan Langfield became the first top 24 contestant eliminated from this year’s MasterChef Australia series after he plated up a pork dish so raw that none of the judges were prepared to taste it.
Depali is eliminated MasterChef Au

Depali is eliminated MasterChef Au

‘Deepali, your beef was cooked unevenly and your pommes didn’t rise – Nick your beef was closer to blue than medium rare, I like it like that, but others don’t.’ He apologised that someone’s MasterChef dream was kaput, ‘I’m sorry, but Deepali that’s you.’ Deepali: ‘I wish I’d made you more proud of me…Who would of thought I’d make steak.’ And with that, she was out the door.

nicole cleave masterchef au

Nicole Cleave leaves MasterChef Au, too soon!

I would of picked Nicole Cleave to go much further. So that was a bummer really to see her cook that entire snapper when she absolutely did not have to do that. She has nothing to gain with that move and everything to lose. Which she did. Here is a follow up article after she was off.
Nick Doyle eliminated Masterchef au season 6

Nick Doyle eliminated

Episode 10- Nick goes home. I cannot believe his family never ate fish! There was no way he would make it. I am surprised he even made it on the show. He seems very inexperienced with anything other than desserts. Episode 11- I thought it was unfair to put the contestant up against a professional for the immunity pin. So of course she lost and no one got the immunity pin today.
Emily Loo eliminated MasterChef Au

Emily Loo eliminated MasterChef Au

Everyone assumed that Loo would make banana fritters and be safe. Instead, she deep-fried the bananas and then coated them in condensed milk and the crumb. The dish was a debacle. “The problem was a lack of self-confidence,” Loo says. “During that time I was pretty upset that I wasn’t doing a good job and I started thinking ‘what’s happening to me?’ That was my take from the beginning with her, and why she was one of my first 5 to go picks. If you do not have self confidence, this show will spit you out so fast. Plus she just did not seem like a very good chef.
Steven Peh eliminated MasterChef Au

Steven Peh eliminated MasterChef Au

His rice pudding, parsnip and Jerusalem artichoke dessert was a litany of disaster including runny ice cream, lumpy panna cotta and a light dusting of jasmine rice foam that exploded all over the judges during plating. At least the judges had a great laugh with it! He lasted longer than I expected.
Scott eliminated MasterChef Au

Scott eliminated MasterChef Au

Scott was befuddled from the start of the pressure test where he had to cook Christine Tanner’s Mango Alfonso and even though the judges praised his sorbet but it was all about the pastry and he was gone.
Sean eliminated MasterChef Au

Sean eliminated MasterChef Au

Sean cooked up Prawns and Tomato Sauce which was similar to what he made in a previous challenge. George said good flavour but and over cooked prawn. His flat bread fell flat. The top two dishes were Rachael and Colin. Bottom three were Sean, Kira and Brent and it was Sean who looks like a hobbit was eliminated. It was the correct decision as he has been struggling for the last few weeks.
rachael goes home masterchef au

rachael goes home masterchef au

Struggling to keep a hold on her emotions, the 45-year-old was forced to completely change tact after one look from judge Matt Preston caused her to second guess the entire dish and start from scratch with just five minutes left on the clock. I wish she would of kept her nerve and served what she made. I feel she was swayed by everyone. She tasted it and said it tasted great. Stick to your food and you go far in this contest. I had picked her for my top 5. You are a nice lady and will be missed.
Sam Gant Eliminated Masterchef au

Sam Gant Eliminated Masterchef au

Sam seemed like she always was smiling. Too much. I like positive people, but on this show especially, constantly smiling is masking things. Also her cooking was not top notch. She did not have the finesse that most of the rest of them do. She was the one who seemed to know Sushi the best and even ate at Nobu before. Her Sushi to me was a real example of how I saw her cooking. Fish too big, slapped on the wasabi, left a bone in, just sloppy.  Also her dish is the one who landed them in this elimination so it was fair for once that she went home.
Sarah Todd Eliminated Masterchef au

Sarah Todd Eliminated Masterchef au

Who was surprised to see Sarah eliminated? And on misnaming a French dish no less! French food was meant to be strong suit. I honestly thing she lost the plot emotionally because she missed her family so much. Sarah I had you as one of my top 5. I somehow feel confident Sarah will be one of the many MasterChef contestants that find open doors and success after the show. We will miss you.
Marco Pierre White and Byron MasterChef Au elimination

Marco Pierre White and Byron MasterChef Au elimination

I love Marco Pierre White. He is the kindest man. The way he talked to Byron today was moving. If Byron would of plated more sauce, he would not be going home. I really liked Byron. I am sad to see him go. He is a real sweetie, and like Marco said to him, he is humble. Marco said humbleness brings greatness. Very enjoyable when Marco comes to town on MasterChef.
Tash Shan eliminated MasterChef Au

Tash Shan eliminated MasterChef Au

Tash Shan was out on the risotto challenge. She added a little too much wine and her asparagus were not special enough. I had you picked to go all the way Tash. Sorry to see you go so soon! Read her feelings here.
Georgia goes home- Masterchef AuCHICKEN TIKKA MASALA ELIMINATES GEORGIA HUGHES IN MASTERCHEFMuch tears. Laura and Georgia were on the bottom and Georgia went home. She messed up her chicken at the end. It could of just of easily been Laura. I am glad Laura made it because I am quite impressed with her. She is only 18 and wow can she cook. Also she has good confidence and stays very composed. She is mature for her age.
kira eliminated masterchef a

Very unfair elimination.
Kira was robbed!

I am not happy about this one. Tracy gave her 15 minutes to cook in the first part and then would not give her the pastry recipe in the final challenge. It certainly felt like Tracy wanted her gone. Kira thought they were good friends. I felt really bad for her. She was one of my favorites. I also had her pegged to make top 5 for sure. I cannot believe Jamie is still in it. He is not a great chef in this contest, but he keeps squeaking by.
Collin goes home masterchef Au

Collin goes home Masterchef Au

Collin goes home. He was a nice guy. I was sad to see him go. I still think Ben and Jamie are the weak chefs left and I seriously hope both of them go home. I feel like they both keep getting by in the middle. They are very hit and miss and Jamie makes so many mistakes and his plating and management skills are terrible. I do not understand why he is still there.

Here is who I think has a good shot to the end. Remember these are picked off first episode. Usually a few people come out strong later in this show. But my 16 year old son and I have a pretty good record of calling at least 2 in the top 3 on shows like this one and Top Chef and Amazing Race. It is fun to “play” the guessing game and see how close you come at the end. Top 6 Sean 5/29/14 Tash 6/18/14 Sarah 6/12/14  Sarah is back 6/24/14 Renae- (she is founder of an ad agency online so I do not think she has nothing to go back too like she said at one point.) Kira 7/2/14 Rachael  Out in elimination 6/4/14 Gosh my picker was way off this season. 4 out of my 5 picks are already gone before top 10! Ones to go early-I find these shows seem to eliminate correctly 90% of the time. It is more than cooking on this show, it is confidence and trusting your own abilities. I think these are the ones that will be eliminated soon. So I am 3 for 3 so far. Wow. Deepali 5/12 She lacked the confidence, and it showed. Also she actually seems quite happy being a Dentist who does food on the side.  Nick 5/19  Super sweet guy but way in over his head. Emily 5/21 She just did not have the skill level. Her plating is especially bad. Steven 6/2  He lasted longer than I expected. Jamie Here is the actual  eliminated order so far. Brendan Deepali Nicole Nick Emily Scott Sean Rachael Sam Sarah! Oh my gosh. Byron Tash Georgia Immunity Challenge episode 16-Tash vs. Benjamin Cooper from CHIN CHIN. I personally think they have make the immunity pin challenge too hard now. There should be a handicap for the home cooks. I mean shish, these other people have been cooking for decades and own restaurants. It really is unfair. Episode 19- Mystery Box. Whoa-who expected Sarah to be on the bottom? Not me. But I think none of them have anything to worry about.  For some reason Steven looks ready to leave. I do not think it is because he got sick either. His heart does not seem in it.  He looks defeated and worn down. What do you think? Those of you in Australia will already know a day before I do! Just about to watch the elimination now. Sean went home.

steven sprays judges with foam masterchef au

They all got covered in foam when Steven Peh tried to use his foam gun. They all laughed about it.

Episode 20 Elimination: Everyone makes mistakes, but who did not laugh out-loud when Stevens foam covered all of them? That was great. All the judges were all cracking up. I am quite glad the other 3 survived. I like all of them.  Byron could be a sneaker who does well in the long haul. But I did not choose him in my top 5 because I think he will last awhile but not make it to the end. Steven seems relieved to me to be leaving. No crying, no pleading for his case. He practically skipped out! Leave a comment on your opinion. I cannot find any websites on line where people go and discuss episodes after. With American shows as soon as they air you can find reviews and discussions. I would love to talk about Masterchef Au. If you know a website that covers it and people leave comments and chat, please leave that in the comment section. Episode 21-Immunity Pin  Challenge: Cheese- These are my least favorite episodes. I am not liking these. Rachael does too much on her plate and her food choices conflict so big surprise- the guest chef wins again. Episode 22- Group Challenge at the Queen Victoria Market. I actually quite liked this challenge. The market was crammed with people and it was all going full bore the entire time.  Drat the red team lost. They just took too long to get those empanadas going. Tash was right about those taking too long. Two of my top five are in the elimination challenge tomorrow. Rachael and Tash. Drat Episode 23- Elimination – I was hoping Ben would go home, he is a nice guy but he one my picks for the “middle”. Someone who makes it to the middle group and then goes. But no, it ended up being Rachael. She just did not have the nerves of steel you need in this competition. If you lose the plot at anytime, you lose period. I wonder if her black pork was yummy. I think she would of had a better chance if she stuck to her original idea. She said it tasted great, but I think she lost her confidence when everyone was appalled at how it looked. I will miss you Rachael, you are a sweetie. Good luck to you. Episode 25-Elimination- Team Challenge Losers, Sam, Byron, Laura. Sam needs to go.  None of her dishes have been stand outs and she is one of those people who makes it in the middle until something like this. Poor Laura put up an amazing dessert and now she has to go into elimination.  The preview showed her saying, I think I’m going home. I hope it is not her. Sam always seems like she is doing her own thing and she has a real reckless air to her, and her looks too. Very messy. Sam lost.  Sloppy sushi and she left a snapper bone in one of them.  The chef Nobu was such a sweet man. He was so kind and encouraging to them. Also it was so cute when George told him, “I like your haircut” and they high fived each other. I love George. He is such a sweetie and great sense of humor.

Jock Zonfrillo

Jock Zonfrillo

Episode 26- Immunity Pin Challenge-What a cutie that Scottish Chef Jock Zonfrillo is! And so sweet too. Amy seems to be coming on strong now. She did a great job with her dish. Jock scared everyone with how he did everything in the last 2 minutes! That is one confident chef. I was sure he was going to have nothing to serve.  Then he served that beautiful pumpkin and beef dish. I have to ask the question, has he made that before??? Anyway of course he won and Amy did great but did not win the elusive immunity pin. But it was a fun episode. I usually am not too into these immunity days, but the sexy and kind Jock Zonfrillo made it better. Also I love how much I learn watching this show. One thing I am desperate to find here in California are those lime-fingerlings. Those look so yummy. Little beads of lime. Sounds like heaven.  Also I have never heard of saltbush before. I also watch River Country Au, so I between these two shows I have learned so much about native plants in Australia. Episode 27 Team Challenge- Did anyone notice Emelia said um quite a bit in her little interview section? She is the dessert queen and making the cake.  Usually um is when someone is unsure or maybe their thinking is running ahead a bit. Also I was not sure Matt was really helping them when he was in the kitchen today. The Red Team- Lost Brent early on, he felt sick, so that was a bummer for then to be one down. On the first dish Ben did not seem to have any idea for what that dish was suppose to be. The rest of them were relying on him to know what the dish was. They just kinda made it up as they went it seemed.  Their dish seemed to go over well, but they did not have a clear idea on their salad dressing and I think that may of hurt them. I am finding Ben annoying now. Why does everyone make so many roulades on all cooking shows?   So the Red team lost. Emelia’s cake was eggy. Which is strange since she is the dessert person. But the main was a fail too, so it was not her cake that tipped the scale.  There are 4 people I do not think will make it all the way on this team up for elimination.  Jamie, Brent, Tracy and Byron. So any of them could go home at this point to me. In the previews one of the strongest “contenders” goes home.  I have Jamie in my bottom 5 from day one, so I do not consider him a contender if it is him but they seem to think he is a contender. Episode 28 Elimination-They had to name classic dishes and two of the strongest chefs failed. Colin and Sarah. Then they had to do a cook off including Tracy. They all picked chicken for some reason. Tracy ended up cooking the best dish but she seriously needs to figure out how to present her food.  Collin pulled off his pastry but the filling was bland, so if Sarah’s dish was not raw, Collin would of been the one to go. With raw chicken Sarah Todd was automatically eliminated. She seemed like an emotional mess today and missed her family too much. Honestly I cannot imagine leaving my kids when they were that young. That would of been very hard. But gosh if you made it this far, I guess you just have to bite the bullet and try to stay in the game. A lot of this contest is emotional control. No doubt. Well there goes another of my top 5 picks. Gosh this is 3 of my top gone. I was surprised she went home today. One of the things I love about this show, is you just never know who will survive until the end. I will say one thing, I am craving some chicken after watching them cook today. Yummy!

Marco Pierre White handsome young man

Marco Pierre White- handsome young man

Episode 29-Mystery BoxMarco Pierre White is the guest chef all week. People were shaking in their boots. I guess they did not watch him on this show years past and on other shows. He is one of the nicest chef’s when I have watched last time he was on MasterChef. He is very kind and encouraging. If you are an idiot or you do not listen he does suffer fools ,but honestly I like him. He is not a tyrant. Anyway geez get a grip, hairdresser chef Tracy. She was a quivering mess. Even though her dish came out well. She will never make it because she cannot control her emotions. That is going to be her downfall. Also did you notice Marco barely glanced at Ben. Good instincts Marco. I am not a fan of Ben. Something about him bugs me. BTW click that link I have for Marco’s website. He was a very handsome man in his youth. He is still handsome, but yipes what a dreamboat in the early days. Of course he oozes charisma. The 3 going to elimination are , Byron, Amy, and Tash. Marco was so nice to Byron. Great advice he gave him too privately. (With the cameras of course). Hmm who will go home? Honestly these pressure tests are so hard, it can always be just about anyone. The best thing is to never get into one of these in the first place!

Marco Pierre White and Byron MasterChef Au

Marco Pierre White giving Byron an encouraging word after he is eliminated
MasterChef Au

Episode 30- Elimination- What a show today. I thought Tash was going home for sure. She was off her game from the start. Her pasta did not turn out, she was behind of things, she started her lentils late. But she managed to get her sauce right and that saved her in the end. Byron did not have enough sauce on his plate and it sent him home. Amy did a great job and they loved her dish. Marco was so supportive and sweet to Byron. I was impressed. He seems like a wise man at this point in life. He has had a tumultuous personal life, so I wonder how that going these days?  😉 I really liked Byron, but I did not see him making it to the end. He did make it quite far. Good luck Byron. You are very good looking and come across well on TV so I bet someone hires you to do a show for them. Chef Donovan and Laura face off.Episode 31-Immunity Challenge: Wow. First time ever a guest chef missed the time deadline! It was an onion chop competition that Marco had them do to determine who went up against the guest chef. Laura, ( omg she is only 18 and she is sunny, cheerful and has freaking nerves of steel!) , Tracy and Ben were the 3 up for it and Laura went slow and steady and won with the finest onion chop. The the celebrity chef was Donovan Cooke. Laura had the chance to pick the main protein or let Donovan pick and she would get 15 extra minutes. She is gutsy. I admire her. Anyway Donovan was not done plating when time was up so Laura won. But also she had a great dish. So congratulations Laura! You won the first immunity pin, you are the youngest ever to win an immunity pin and you are kicking butt right now! Episode 32-Team Challenge-Restaurant Service- I have a hard time watching the restaurant service team challenges. I was a waitress in fine dining for 12 years, and it actually stresses me out to watch the restaurant challenges, on any show, Top Chef, MasterChef, any of them. So they had the blue team, headed up by Emelia, and the red team, headed up by Renae. (They spell their names differently than most). The key component to me that made the difference was Renae and her team, (they did not show them discussing the menu) seemed to pull their menu together quite quickly. Then as they say all the time in Australia, they got cracking fast. Well actually they say “that was cracking”, when something is really good, so I may be wrong in how I just used that. 🙂 Emelia really dithered and could not come up with a good menu. So that was a problem all the way through I thought. The blue team’s roast beef by Jamie has me craving a piece of prime rib now. That looked so awesome.  Ben, also on the blue team, did this strange fish I have never heard of and cooked it perfectly. Amy (blue team) did the dish of the day with a parsnip soup with Stilton and bread crumbs on top. Yum. I want that meal. The red team’s food did not look that good. Bland scallops, bland gristle filled chicken sausage, bland pork, with super sweet sides, and the two winners were Lamb Chops by Brent, and dessert by Tash, who followed Emelia’s advice on how many gelatin sheets to use and had to start over when it did not set! Tash made a simple Earl Grey gelatin with fresh berries, cream and a cookie. I usually watch this show while I eat my lunch. My lunch was not very appealing today watching the yummy food the blue team made. So tomorrow the red team goes to Elimination. Poor Laura just won her immunity pin and now they are asking her if she wants to use it. Early days Laura. You do not need to use it yet. You are a great cook and you will make it through tomorrow for sure. Save that pin for the end. I am sure she will anyway. Who do I think will be in the bottom 3?  The previews made it look like Emelia, Collin and Kira. But you cannot really go by the previews. I would say Brent, Collin and gosh I do not know who else. They all are quite strong now. Out of the entire group of them, the weak links left to me are  Tracy, Ben, Jamie,  Georgia and Collin and Brent. I would be surprised if any of them are in the finals. You never know though! That is part of the fun watching this show.  Episode 33 Elimination- They had to cook classic risotto, the “death dish” of MasterChef. When Kira decided to use Quinoa, I thought she was a goner. How can they judge her risotto if it is not actually rice? Everyone else seemed like they were fairly sure of themselves. Laura used her immunity pin! Way way too early girl. She let the rest of the group talk her into it. The problem with everyone getting along so well, and becoming such good buddies, is they are all too emotionally involved with each other at this point.  Anyway Tash put way too much wine in hers and lost. They loved the crazy not made with rice quinoa dish by Kira, and it got dish of the day. Though it did not look that pretty to me. Emelia was emotional and Marco thought that was a breakthrough for her as a chef. Well I am down 4 out of my initial pick for top 6. This group was not easy to pick. They all turned out to be much better than they looked and they seem to be learning and growing and helping each other a lot in their down time. I think this is the nicest group of people the show has had, and talented too. Tash did not seem that upset to lose. Which I found strange. Oh well. I just read this statement she made in an interview. “I drew the short stick in that respect (lack of friends). If you’re feeling alone at school or at work you get to go home at the end of the day to be with your family. In this situation it is so hard to get perspective.” I had a strange feeling they were leaving her out of their little groups. She started to feel alone in the show. Sorry about that Tash.  Episode  34 Team Challenge- It was interesting how Emelia, Jamie and Brent all had already worked out a dish together.  That was kinda cool really. I have to say now that we are this far alone, Emelia is bugging me. She seems kinda snobby and she has “her” people and makes it quite obvious like when she cried when it was between Tash and Brent and she said she wanted Brent to stay, that was rude. Well that team won. The bottom team was Laura, Georgia, and Amy. Laura once again did great with her part and yet still ended up in elimination again because of a team. I feel bad for her. I like Laura and am amazed she is so good at only 18. Then Renae took this challenge they had and landed herself in the elimination. That was a bummer. I never would of done that challenge. Two of them had to name things correctly and then if you lost you went to elimination and it was totally voluntary. Episode 35 Elimination- They had to cook an Indian dish, that was a fancy tika masala type of roulade. It looked yummy. Laura and Georgia both struggled and were on the bottom and Georgia went home. I did not think she would make it this far anyway. Everyone was bawling their eyes out. They are all so emotional and like besties, it is actually getting annoying to me. I am very excited for the next show. They are bringing back all the people who were eliminated and they all get one more shot! Sarah may make it back in. That would be whom I think would make it back out of all of them, or maybe Nicole will get a chance to show she is better than her whole fish error. That would be amazing. I am looking forward to this 2nd chance show! Episode 36 2nd chance– I love when they bring everyone back. First you really realize how the majority of the people gone, should be gone. Nick once again said he could only cook desserts and skipped the fish! Nick how did you even get on the show if all you can cook is desserts? Emily Loo tanked it again, she has problems with nerves and timing, and also she only cooks Asian, so that won’t work. Scott put out another mediocre dish, Sam dish was sloppy again and missed the mark. Tash looked like she did not even want to be there, so that was sad to me, because I think she is a good chef. She obviously has some resentments towards the house. They are a cliquey bunch right now and is Emelia bugging the crap out of anyone else? She is so smug and even her accent is grating on me. I do not want her to win. I was disappointing in Nicole Cleave not wanting to have another crack at that fish dish. I guess she really did not have what it takes. Also she was a giggly silly thing and did not seem like she wanted to come back anyway. Steve and Depali were forgettable. So Rachael and Byron and Brendan really wanted back. Byron over complicated his tiny bird and bombed out, Rachael did a good recook but it was not enough. Brendan was the big surprise, he recooked his dish that got him eliminated and did a great job.  I thought he might even make it back in, but he didn’t.  Sean kept is simple this time, but it was too simple.  Sarah and Georgia were the final two both with those chicken roulades again. Sarah won and is back in. I think that was the right call. She is a great cook and I had her picked for the final 5 and I am pretty sure she will be there now. Episode 37 Team Challenge-no elimination for the rest of the week- I found this episode boring. They had two teams and cooked for charity. The winning team will fight for the new item called the “Power Apron” oooohh. Seems like much ado about nothing to me. I love this show but they over dramatize the little awards they make these guys fight for. I personally have not seen anyone actually win because they were in control of the protein or what to cook that day, have you? I have seen them tank and lose on their own choices plenty of times however. The blue team won. Episode 38 Power Apron Advantage Cook Off– Emelia, Jamie, Tracy, Brent, Amy. First course- Jamie nails it, much to my surprise since I do not think he is very good. He makes a delicate beet root and goat cheese salad and seems on top of it. Emelia slices her finger but soldiers on and they feature her  talking with her annoying voice way too much, as usual.  Amy bombs on her beet root and goat cheese salad, everything was too hot and melting on her plate. Which is too bad. I have come to like Amy and think she is a good chef. Brent tries to do too much and fails. Tracy makes a yummy looking pumpkin and lobster soup. Round Two-Emelia, Jamie and Tracy. Jamie is now showing why I am sure he is going out soon, he is scattered and disorganized and undercooks his freekeh, which I have never heard of before. It is a middle eastern grain. He is lucky he is still on the show. He constantly under-cooks food. I think he should be long gone. Tracy cooks a cracking duck dish that cooks at home and she nails it. She is so on her game today. Emelia has her bloody finger and her glove is filling with blood, gross, but she cooks a filet and some weird almond seaweed paste that they hate.  So her paste is worse than Jamie’s undercooked freekeh. Round Three- Jamie loses it straight out of the gate. His station is a mess, he is lost and confused and finally ends up making a bad mousse with berries. Wow how boring and uncreative is that? Tracy makes this dessert that looks so amazing and yummy with salted carmel sauce and cookie crumble and ice cream. Zikes. On the plate I wanted it so bad. The judges were funny. They did not comment on either dish, other than to ask Amy is every thing on her plate had sugar, and she said yes. Then they all took one bite and put their spoons down and went to decide. Tracy needs to have more confidence in herself! She always cries and gets all insecure when they question her. I now see she is a great chef but her nerves and lack of confidence will be why she loses if she makes it to the end. She needs to get a grip on that. When you watch Kira cook, that lady never doubts herself and she has nerves of steel. That is why I am quite sure she will be in the final 3. The judges came back and told Tracy they loved her dish, it was perfectly balanced and they could hardly control themselves to eat that one bite and not keep gobbling it up! Tracy wins. I think they are all lucky Tracy won because she is a big softie and will not do anything too bad to any of them. She does not have the killer instinct at all. Next week will be interesting. Episode 39 Invention Test– Tracy, whom I really have grown to like. She is getting stronger as it goes. Has the power apron. She got to pick the ingredients for the mystery box and they invention test. Holy Moly, did you see Renae freaking out over that eel? Good grief. I have been watching River Cottage the UK version, and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall loves eel, and has it on several times. I am not interesting in trying eel but I do not think I would of freaked out at the site of it. It does look like a big snake though. Anyway, they were really nice to her and let Collin prep it for her. Which I was surprised about.

Renae freaks out over eel

Renae freaks out over eel

She ended up making one of their favorite dishes. Sarah got 15 minutes and tripe, (yuck) and she deep fried it and they said it was the new calamari! She is good. On the bottom was Jamie again, for under-cooking prawns. He should go home for that alone. Under-cooking prawns?? Those cook so darn fast. He really is the most inconsistent one left and I picked him for my top 6 to go home first so I hope he goes home tomorrow. I just do not think he is that good. He has been lucky to me. Ben cooked a terrible dish and he had 30 minutes and chili’s. I do not know what he was thinking of. But he skated through. Collin ended up having to trade with Brent, who took his whole chicken, and got chocolate and made a bad dessert in 30 minutes. Kira, who is such a top contender had a bad day. She had turkey breast and only 15 minutes and burnt her popcorn turkey. I was bummed out for her. I wish Ben was in the bottom instead. So those are our 3 tomorrow. Kira, Collin and Jamie. Jamie is the one who needs to go now. Kira and Collin are both good, but Kira is a champ to me.  Episode 40 Elimination: Kira went home. I am so mad, I will have to write about this one later. She was pretty mad too. Tracy pretty much is the one who managed to get her out, and she thought her and Tracy were close. Read what she said here about feeling betrayed.

Ep 41, Tuesday, July 1, 2014 – Immunity Challenge

Tracy automatically in the immunity challenge, and she can picked two other contestants to cook against in Round 1 Tracy picked Laura and Colin.

How odd is this, Colin in the Pressure Test, then in the Immunity Challenge in the same week!

Round 1 Knock-Out Challenge (45 minutes): Bar snack using beer

Winner: Tracy

Round 2 Against a Chef (amateur 75 minutes vs professional 75 minutes): Choice of two chefs to cook against Jason Jones (B’Stilla) or James Viles (Biota)

Tracy chose James to cook against Coin toss to decide who choose the core ingredients James said head, coin landed tail

Core Ingredient Choices (Tracy’s choice): heads, tails

Good to see Laura helping Tracy with the gnocchi recipe after Tracy chose her to play in Round 1 of the challenge tonight. What’s the deal with black and charred food this year, must be the trend, they looked disgusting, LOL Finally Gary admitted they can tell who cooked which dish, LOL…

Scores: Tracy – Gary 9/10, George 9/10, Matt 9/10 = 27/30 James – Gary 9/10, George 9/10, Matt 8/10 = 26/30

Ep 42, Wednesday, July 2, 2014 – Team Challenge

Team Challenge: Preparing a banquet at Split Point Lighthouse for 20 best producers from Aireys Inlet, The Great Ocean Road

Tracy gets to choose her team first: Red Team – Tracy (captain), Emelia, Sarah, Jamie, Ben Blue Team – Laura (captain), Amy, Brent, Colin, Renae

Can’t help laughing that yesterday, Tracy’s best friends, Laura and Colin, were good enough to be in Immunity Challenge with her, but a totally different story tonight when she gets to pick her team (which she considered the stronger cooks) that her two best friends are now not good enough to be on her team!

5 hours available to prepare with limited pantry ingredients Teams have to buy their produce with time, 3 proteins per team

Tracy (Red) first and second picks for protein, pork (45 minutes), shellfish (30 minutes) Laura (Blue) then picks lamb (60 minutes), snapper (60 minutes) Tracy (Red) then picks crayfish (45 minutes) Which left the last protein, duck (45 minutes) for Laura (Blue) For the vegetables, Laura (Blue) picks green vegetables (15 minutes) Tracy (Red) then picks green vegetables (15 minutes), and pumpkins/carrots/corns (30 minutes) Laura (Blue) finally picks potatoes (20 minutes)

So preparation and cooking time: Red Team – 2 hours 15 minutes Blue Team – 1 hour 40 minutes

LOL, another howling wind situation for the challenge, reminiscence of the CWA challenge from Season 2! Brent is the lamb dude this year! Has he cooked any other meat at all out of choice?

Winner: Red Team

Pork Belly, Pork Scratchings and Spiced Pumpkin (Red Team) Lobster, Bread & Pickle (Red Team) Braised Leeks with Oysters (Red Team)

Ep 43, Thursday, July 3, 2014 – Mexican Elimination

Tracy can use her Power Apron to save one contestant from elimination. Tracy wanted to save Laura or Colin, but ended up saving Laura (reason was maternal instinct)

Round 1 (45 minutes): Savoury Mexican (Cooking in pairs) Brent and Amy Colin and Renae

Losing pair go into round 2.

What’s going on, the judges kept asking about the final presentation of their dish today? Also interesting both pairs were going to make self-serve style Mexican food in the beginning, who’s copying whom? Like Brent’s calm attitude, he just got on with the cooking, and trying to bring Amy to the right headspace at the same time. He could be the dark horse to win this season.

Judges said “Yuk” to Colin and Renae’s dish. Jeez, the judges are doing it again, bet they love Brent and Amy’s dish but pretending they hate it! Fireball… Commercial… It is getting old hat! Yep, they love it, no mistake on their dish…

Colin and Renae going into Round 2.

Round 2 (60 minutes): Mexican Flavoured Dessert

Eliminated: Colin

The judging were fickle to say the least. Time and time again the judges said the dish they would go back to would win, but when it didn’t suit them, they found some other reasons to kick someone off the show. They said Renae’s fondant was floury and didn’t taste good, and Colin’s dish was not cohesive as a whole but individual element tasted good on their own… Yeah, right, judges are just dancing to the producers’ tune. Gary must be tired with the charade as well, he didn’t even want to pretend anymore, and said, “You say it,” a couple of times to the other two judges and Matt took up the slack with the usual “we secretly loved your dish, but I’m going to make you sweat first with the appalling act that we hated it…”

Fish Tostaditas Re-Imagined (Amy Shields & Brent Owens) – It is just odd how this recipe was attributed to Amy only on MCA site, she may have done the fish part but I thought Brent took the lead with the recipe on how the whole dish came together in the end?????

Choc Chilli Lava Cake (Renae Smith)

MasterChef eliminated contestant Colin Sheppard rejects Tash Shan’s claim she was ignored

Ep 44, Sunday, July 6, 2014 – Barter-System Mystery Box & Retro Invention Test

Barter Box (60 minutes): With the same six items in each contestant’s Mystery Box, they all must barter with each other to get a variety of ingredients.

Amy – radicchio Ben – walnut Brent – honey Emelia – beetroot Jamie – pear Laura – lemon Renae – sage Sarah – blue cheese Tracy – fennel

Nobody wanted sage, hahaha. In the end, Renae ended up with lots of sage, 1 beetroot and 1 blue cheese. Do you get the feeling the contestants were told which bench/Mystery Box they were to stand in front of? Judges’ favourites, Laura, an Italian gets lemon, and Sarah who cooks French gets blue cheese! And the boys all get nuts/fruit and dessert ingredients, the other women all get vegetables/herbs…

Best Dish: Amy

Invention Test (60 minutes): Re-Inventing a Retro Dish Retro Dish Choices: 60s’ Prawn Cocktail70s’ Apricot Chicken80s’ Nouvelle Cuisine

LOL, today is Sarah’s turn to make black food! The squid-ink coated chicken looks like charcoal chicken… Not inviting at all! What, did Gary really said Amy with all the advantage today? Are you kidding, don’t think Amy got any more advantage than anyone else after winning Mystery Box today. So George hated dish in the promo is Sarah’s! Laura was protected lucky she was told by Gary that her dish did not look good ten minutes before the end of cooking time, then got hint from George in the pantry where she was fluffing about what to do…

Top 3: Amy, Laura, Ben Bottom 3: Sarah, Emelia, Tracy Renae will go into elimination if Tracy plays her immunity pin tomorrow.

Raddichio Tortellini with Blue Cheese Cream (Amy Shields) Cheese and Fennel Salad (Brent Owens) Blue Cheese, Sage and Beetroot Tart (Renae Smith)

Chicken and Apricot Curry (Amy Shields) Apricot Chicken with Spinach and Stuffed Rice (Ben Macdonald) Polenta with Apricot Chicken and Pangretata (Laura Cassai)

This got to be too much work to keep updated and the traffic was not worth it. But we are down to the final 3. Laura, Emlia and Brent. They had a masterclass today and everyone was there except Tash. Where is Tash? Is she pissed off at everyone? Why didn’t she go to the masterclass?

Where is Tash?

Where is Tash?

  1. I disagree about Ben: he is smug and ungracious. At Queen Vic, neither of the men admitted that Tash was right and that the only reason they didn’t go into the red was because of her dish served in the last 40 minutes of the 2 hour challenge. Had they listened to her from the start, they might well have won.

  2. Mike Lamson says

I totally agree with Geoffrey about Ben. He is smug and ungracious. But I do not think he long for this game actually. I do not think he is that good.
