Zooey Deschanel wouldn’t call Prince her “bud” — how any mere mortal gets to that level with the Purple One is beyond us – but the New Girl star spoke about her budding artistic relationship with the beloved musician in a new interview with The Associated Press. “He is incredibly nice and so generous and just so talented — a really wonderful person and I feel lucky to know him,” she said.

Prince’s ‘New Girl’ performance leaves creator teary eyed
After spending time with him, Meriwether understands those feelings as well.
“I definitely felt the awe of it when I was talking to him,” she said. “I’m very awkward in general and talking to Prince and trying to keep it together was not easy. I think he brings that out in people because he’s a true genius. If you are a die-hard Prince fan, you’re going to really enjoy the episode because it’s a new fun look at him. He’s really, really funny.”
Prince: New Girl producers ‘among the millions who truly miss the brilliant Artist’ 
In a statement issued today, the New Girl producers, who include creator Liz Meriwether, said: “We are all so deeply saddened to hear about the passing of this hero of ours – and so grateful to have had the opportunity to meet him and to have him on our show. It’s something we will remember forever. Our thoughts go out to his family. We are among the millions of people who will truly miss the brilliant Artist.”
Meriwether also paid tribute to the “extraordinary” Prince on Twitter, as did the cast; Deschanel called him “a king among men,” while Johnson said that the musician was “everything I hoped he’d be.”
